As tenants of the Egglihof in Wilen near Wollerau we take care of the welfare of our animals every day. We took over the farm as the Zeller family in November 2015 and have been living here ever since. Hans Portmann still lives with us, who has spent his whole life in the Eggli and now enjoys his well-deserved retirement. At our location in Wilen we appreciate the central location and above all the proximity to the recreational area of the Leutsch vineyards. The birds also like to live here; we hear them chirping at every hour, whether in the morning or in the evening.
Not only dairy cows live in the barn, but also happy hens, which have free run every day and whose eggs we sell. They can also buy raw milk from our satisfied Holstein cows. It is available in the form of a milk subscription for 3, 6 or 12 months. This means that you can collect up to five litres of milk each week with your own container during the whole period of use. We are to be found daily from 17.00 – 18.30 o’clock in the stable.
We hope that the many small family farms in agriculture can be maintained in the future. The current agricultural policy worries us because it only relies on the larger farms. As small farmers and with us thousands of other families in Switzerland, we have little chance of surviving without a part-time job. We therefore hope that our profile will draw the attention of society to this problem. Because if we continue like this, we will not only endanger the future of countless farming families in our country, but the landscape will also change: Who wants to be a big farmer and still take care of the numerous small details that require a lot of manual work – for example mowing out a brook bed or caring for the edge of a forest – when he has more and more land to cultivate with his huge machines.
For the future, we hope that young farmers like our sons will also find a farm that they can continue to run and that offers them enough opportunities to feed their families without having to take on a second job.
If you also want to preserve our Swiss landscape and would like to try our fresh milk or eggs, we would be delighted to hear from you.
